  • Robert James Cummings decided with two of his classmates to join the Marines after graduation in 1946. He went to Paris Island for his boot camp. Unfortunately, they were all assigned to different bases.

My Father went to the Subic Bay in the Philippines on an aircraft carrier named The Boxer. He was assigned to the Motor Pool because of his mechanical skills. He also did some boxing while in the Marines. One of his experiences was when he drove some of his fellow Marines to an inland lake to swim. The next day, another driver drove a group to the same place - but they were ambushed by guerilla soldiers, and several were killed. Another duty he had was to sometimes babysit the Colonel’s young son.

He was released early due to the death of his mother. He shortly after was married to Elsie (Wilder) Rodocker of Northville and settled in Northville and bought a house on Grace St.  He worked for Daisy BB Guns and Ford Motor Co. He has two sons, Robert Jr and Scott. He also has two step children Frank and Marcia. He passed away from a fall in 2010.
