Our dad was seaman First Class in the United States Coast Guard. He served as a powderman on a five-inch gun aboard a troop transport. His transport was engaged in the vital task of keeping Eisenhower's forces supplied with manpower essential for the Battle of Germany. He also served in England, off the coast of Italy, and made a cruise to Argentina.

Homer was born in Sault Saint Marie, but his family moved to Northville where he attended Northville High School in ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade before entering the service. He and his fellow NHS veterans founded and maintained Northville's VFW Post 4012.
