John Kirby Winters proudly served his country in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After his 1943 induction, he trained at MIT to serve in the signal corps. Shipping out on the Lurline, a converted luxury cruise ship, he slept in the ballroom on five-tiered bunks. He served in the 176th Signal Company where he achieved the rank of Technician Third Grade, or Tech Sergeant. He was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines, ending the war as part of the occupying force in Yokohama, Japan.
He returned as a decorated veteran to complete his studies at the University of Michigan, where he met Lois and began 68 years of marriage. The Winters moved to Northville in 1973.
