Joe joined the army when he was 17, on August 13, 1964. He got on a bus in West Branch, Michigan for basic training in Knoxville, Tennessee. Upon graduation, he was sent to Fort Jackson, South Carolina, then on to Germany and then to Vietnam in 1966.

He trained as a light vehicle driver and drove a gas tanker while in Germany and was a Radio Operator in Vietnam. Upon completion of his tour in Vietnam, Joe returned to the States and finished his service at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
