My Dad lied about his age so he could enlist when he was only 17 years old. He was a cook and was stationed on several ships including a destroyer escort. In the Navy he would have to cook for dozens of men at a time, often stirring the soup pots, with an oar, and peeling bushel baskets of potatoes. He learned the art of cooking for big groups, and carried the skill with him throughout his life.
He would also volunteer at the Veteran's Hospital and play cards with the wounded vets. He never wanted them to feel lonely.
