Captain Robert English served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1943-1953, first as a bombardier in the 15th Air Corps during WWII, then as a war planner during the Korean War. Stationed in Italy during WWII, he flew some of the most hazardous missions of the war, including several to destroy the Nazi oil fields at Ploesti, Romania, which supplied Germany with the largest of crude oil for its war effort. On one such mission, he and his crew were shot down over Yugoslavia and were rescued by Chetnik guerrillas, returning to their base in Italy after six weeks as Missing in Action. His awards for valor included the Purple Heart, Air Medal, and Presidential Unit Citation.
